Live Review: Fightstar – Newcastle University, October 26th 2009

October 30, 2009

FightstarFightstar’s second tour of Be Human has seen them step-up venue sizes, moving into bigger venues that, with any fairness in the world, they should be selling out. Interview: Alphabeat

October 28, 2009

AlphabeatWhile promoting new single The Spell, Faye sat down with Anders SG and Troels of the Danish pop sensation Alphabeat, ahead of their Newcastle show during the band’s mini UK tour. We got talking to the chart toppers about the new album, signing to Polydor, future plans, and that X-Factor performance of Fascination, as well as a whole lot more.

Faye: Can you say your names and what you do?
Anders SG: I’m Anders SG and I sing.
Troels: I’m Troels and I’m the drummer.

Faye: You’ve been a bit quiet this year, what have you been up to?
Anders SG: We’ve actually just been focusing 100% on doing the new album that’s coming out around January/February, so that’s what we’ve been doing. We just decided that we didn’t want to play any gigs at all while making the record, just to be fully focused on that.
Troels: Yeah, this is our first tour after we finished touring last year, so it’s great to be back and playing live again.

Faye: You released the single The Spell last week, I believe it got to 20 in the UK charts, but number one in Denmark, are you happy with the response here?
Anders SG: You can’t really complain about it, it’s a top 20 single, so we’re really happy with that. We just hope we can build it back up again, because I guess we’re back with a new sound and everything, so people maybe have to adjust a bit to that, so we’ll just build on.

Interview: Suicide Silence

October 28, 2009

Suicide+SilenceAs part of a mammoth bill that includes the likes of DevilDriver and Behemoth, as well as UK upcomers Trigger The Bloodshed and Malefice, Suicide Silence are snaking their way around the UK, and George catches up with frontman Mitch Lucker for a chin-wag. They talk tattoos, the band’s game plan for after new album No Time To Bleed, and Mitch has a few choice words for his haters…

George: Can you say your name and what you do in the band?
Mitch: My name’s Mitch, and I sing in Suicide Silence.

George: How are you enjoying tour so far?
Mitch: It’s been amazing, every show’s been sold out, and just fucking crazy, very fucking crazy.

George: What do you make of the UK talent on the tour?
Mitch: Trigger The Bloodshed’s fucking amazing, and so is Malefice, both bands are really good, different, 100%, different. They’re just good dudes, and when you’re on tour, with a bunch of bands, no matter if they suck or if they’re good, if they’re good dudes, it makes them an even better band, so just them being polite, them being cool with us and stuff, they’re both talented bands, both cool dudes, that’s all I have to say.

Interview: Fightstar

October 27, 2009

FightstarInto their second tour in support of the brilliant new record Be Human, London rockers Fightstar pull into Newcastle, and George catches frontman Charlie Simpson for a quick chat. They talk about Be Human‘s special edition re-release due soon, the idea behind the strange album art, and a whole host of other bits and pieces, without an Air Hostess or a Year 3000 in sight!

George: Can you say your name, and what you do in the band?
Charlie: My name’s Charlie, and I play guitar and sing in Fightstar.

George: How’s the tour been so far?
Charlie: Yeah, good, man! I think it’s our fifth show, and we had a wicked one last night in Glasgow, I think it feels like the best set we’ve ever done. We were kind of encapsulating songs from right across the back catalogue. One of the songs was one of the first songs we’d ever wrote and then we were playing a song that’s not even out yet, so it seems like it’s a good set.

George: Saving Aimee, Young Guns and Prego; talk us through them, why are you a fan?

Charlie: Well, basically we’re swapping between Saving Aimee and Deaf Havana as well who’ve been doing shows, and first of all Prego, is my brother’s band, obviously, my brother (Ed)’s singing in it and they’re just an epic band, man, and their music’s absolutely brilliant. I was wondering to begin with whether their sound would go down with our fans because it’s more post-rock isn’t it, but they seem to be getting on really good, and Young Guns, and Deaf Havana and Saving Aimee are just really nice lads and they write great songs, they’ve got a lot of good songs.
