Interview: Set Your Goals

December 30, 2009

During Set Your Goals‘ recent headline stint in the UK, Faye sat down with their chirpy co-frontman Jordan Brown, ahead of their Leeds show, where the two had a long chat about the release of This Will Be The Death Of Us, including its plethora of guest vocals and how they leaked it themselves, as well as getting arrested with Fireworks, and their love for Popina’s!

Faye: How are you today?
Jordan: I’m good, I’m really good, I’m happy to be in Leeds.

Faye: Have you been to Popina’s cafe today? I know you’re a fan of their English breakfasts.
Jordan: We went to Popina’s today, but I actually missed out because I slept in, but everyone else went and, yeah, they definitely had their fill of the Ultimate Breakfast Challenge, that’s for sure.

Faye: Did anyone accomplish the mega breakfast?
Jordan: I actually haven’t asked if they did it this time, Dan usually tries it and he can’t make it past the blood sausage, it’s usually where he ends. It think we’re yet to actually have a successful member of our band do it. [Shouts over to Dan Coddaire – guitarist] Did anyone take that breakfast challenge today and beat it?
Dan: Phil [SYG tour manager] was the only one who actually ate it and I don’t even think he was trying to take the challenge, I think he just wanted a lot of food. I did it once, it was fucking tough, it took me like an hour.

Faye: So, you’ve been touring with Broadway Calls and Fireworks for the past couple of weeks in Europe, how’s that been?
Jordan: It’s been really good, Europe was a lot of fun. I wish we could have played some more countries, but everywhere we played was great and I we’ve got about a week’s worth of shows left here, I think there’s seven left. It’s been awesome, it’s cool being out with Broadway Calls, it’s our first time getting to know them outside of Warped Tour, like being on an intimate hang-out tour and that’s been really cool. Fireworks, I don’t think we’ll ever stop touring with them, they’re some of our best friends.

Interview: Elliot Minor

December 24, 2009

After being moved across town to Northumbria University, the boys in Elliot Minor stop off in Newcastle as part of their Solaris Tour. George catches up with keyboardist Ali Paul and bassist Ed “Teddy” Hetherton, for their reactions on recent events; they talk around the lack of buzz for their band these days, cringing over fireworks, and Ali plugs Franko a few dozen times.

George: Can you say your names, and what you do in the band?
Ali: My name’s Ali, I play keyboards in Elliot Minor.
Ed/Teddy: My name’s Ed, and I play bass.

George: How’s the tour been so far?
Ed: Good! I think we got bored of playing the old stuff, so it’s good to be playing some new stuff.

George: How have Me vs Hero and Franko been received on this tour?
Ali: Pretty well, I think yeah, I mean Franko are so accomplished for their age, real professionalism, really good songs, Me vs Hero are perfect for just before we go on, they’re a bit harder sound, a bit more rocky, and they really get the crowd sort of buzzed, so yeah! Perfect supports.

George: Solaris has just been released, are you pleased with it’s initial reaction so far?
Teddy: Ish.
Ali: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I suppose we would have hoped for a wider audience to of heard it. We’ve had some issues behind the scenes, and with the promotion we were able to get from changing record labels and stuff, but from the people who have heard it, we’ve had an amazing response.

Interview: Fireworks

December 18, 2009

Ahead of playing with Set Your Goals and Broadway Calls in Glasgow, Faye caught up with Fireworks, as they talked about their first time over, Mandatory Stage Dive Day in Leeds, the release of All I Have To Offer Is Confusion, their acceptance in the hardcore community, that Cartel song, and lots more!

Faye: Can you say your name and what you do in Fireworks?
Chris: I’m Chris and I play guitar.
Dave: I’m Dave and I sing.
Brett: Wassup? I’m Brett, I play guitar.
Kyle: I’m Kyle and I play bass.

Faye: It’s Fireworks’ first time in the UK, how has it been?
Chris: It’s been great, we didn’t really expect, Europe was cool, but once we got to the UK, it was really, really good. All the shows have been beyond awesome and everyone’s great. Everyone we’ve met has been awesome, we’ve had a fun time.

Faye: How’s touring with Set Your Goals and Broadway Calls?
Kyle: Well, this is our third tour this year with Set Your Goals, if that says anything? Honestly, they’re some of our closest friends in the world, they’re our favourite band to tour with, by far. We knew Broadway Calls from playing a few shows with them and they’ve been the best dudes, they’ve been nice enough to take us in their van for the rest of the tour.
Chris: Which has been way more fun.
Kyle: I feel like we definitely bonded with Broadway Calls. Matt and I kind of fool around a little bit, I think we’re a little close now.
Chris: Well, Kyle, Matt and I share an even closer bond because we’re always in the search for UMA, UMA being T-Mobile, we’re out, our phone’s don’t work, Matt’s still reigning supreme in the UMA game.
Matt (of Broadway Calls): That’s unlimited mobile access!

Interview: Madball

December 17, 2009

While recently touring the UK, Faye sat down with Madball frontman, Freddy Madball, in Leeds, where they discussed: the band’s longevity, whether “Growing up in New York doesn’t mean shit anymore.”, Madball’s next record, Freddy’s hip-hop career, religion, and a whole lot more. Here’s what went down…

Faye: You’re in the middle of a UK, how’s it been going?
Freddy: So far, so good. We haven’t done a proper UK tour in a little while, and I think it’s going well. We’ve had a few sold out shows, for the UK and for hardcore, I think that’s a good thing, so, so far, it’s going as planned.

Faye: You’ve had some drummer issues, I understand Ben Dussault (ex-Throwdown) has been your drummer for a while now?
Freddy: Yeah, Ben from Throwdown is our drummer, at the moment, and we’re just trying to feel things out, you know? He came to help us out, before him, we had Mackie from Cro-Mags, he’s a dear friend, but he got a little bit busy with Cro-Mags, so we had to go our separate ways just because it was getting a bit too much with the schedules, but he’s my boy. Ben came into the mix, and he’s been very helpful, so we’ll see where we’ll go from there.

Faye: So, he’s not a permanent member?
Freddy: It’s hard to say, I mean, Mackie has gotten super busy with the Cro-Mags, so I don’t really see that happening again, but Ben has been helping us, I don’t know if it’s going to be permanent . He’s a fan of the band and he was drumming for Throwdown for years, so he knows what he’s doing, it’s been good for us.

Faye: Madball has been together as a band for 20-years and still going strong, touring pretty much non-stop, why is it that most modern hardcore bands don’t seem to last more than a few years?
Freddy: It must be something. [laughs] Something that keeps us around. I don’t know, I guess, it’s been 20-years, but when the band first came about and was born, so to speak, I was, personally, very, very young and so we weren’t actively touring until probably the early nineties, but ever since then we’ve been actively touring. We had a little hiatus in 2000-ish, for a year-and-half to two-years, but I guess you can say we’ve been pretty much active for that amount of time. I don’t know, our music is sincere, that’s the only thing I can attribute to it and our style is unique, that’s only really the thing I can think of. We didn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but we definitely did our own brand of hardcore and maybe the fact that it’s unique in that way and that we’ve stuck with it, and we’re honest with our music and, I guess, we put on a decent live show, I guess all those factors have given us that longevity. We’re still fairly young, all things considered [laughs], we’re like the young veterans, I guess you can say, we’re like the younger batch of the veteran bands that are still around doing it.

Interview: Emmure

December 6, 2009

During their recent European stint with Caliban, Faye caught up with Frankie Palmeri, front man of the notorious Emmure, as they discussed the success of new album Felony, the band’s relationship with Victory Records, why you should expect a bloody nose at their shows, their beef with The Acacia Strain, Kurt Angle, and, of course, boxing gloves…

Faye: How are you today?
Frankie: I’m doing ok, we’re in Newcastle, it’s kind of cold outside, so we’re trying to stay indoors.

Faye: You’ve been on tour in Europe for a few weeks, how’s that been?
Frankie: It’s been great, we were in mainland Europe for a few weeks and we’ve only been in the UK for about 9-days, but we’re almost done, we’re almost home. We play Newcastle today and in a few days we do London and then we’re home, so I’m pretty stoked.

Faye: How’s the UK leg of the tour been?
Frankie: Oh, it’s been great, everywhere we’ve went there’s been kids stoked to see us play and just being part of this package has been really fun too, so everything’s been pretty cool. We’ve never headlined anywhere in Europe ever, so to be headlining in the UK has been cool. Caliban are awesome, they’re good German dudes, they’ve been doing this for a long and they have quite the reputation for a metalcore band, especially for their longevity, so it’s been a pleasure to be around people like that.
