Interview: All Or Nothing

March 31, 2010

Visiting Newcastle for the first time, Faye sat down with one of the UK’s premier pop-punk acts All Or Nothing, while on tour with A Loss For Words. They got talking about the band’s line-up changes, the possibility of touring America, recording their full-length, and a lot more!

Faye: Can you say your name and what you do?
Tom: I’m Tom Chong, and I sing and play guitar in All Or Nothing.
Rich: I’m Rich Murphy, and I play guitar and sing, too.

Faye: How are you today?
Tom: Good, actually. I’ve had a bad throat for a few days and now it seems to be getting better.
Rich: We both have, we’ve both been having really bad throats, so it’s been really annoying every night, hurting to sing and stuff like that.
Tom: Last night we got in a hot tub, so I think that helped.

Faye: Can you tell me a little bit about All Or Nothing?
Tom: I started when I was like 16/17 with my friend who’s not in the band anymore, we started playing local shows, which pretty much went on for a few years. Then line-up changes started to happen, Rich used to play in a band called Midriff.
Rich: [laughs] Why did you need to name-drop that?
Tom: ‘Cause it’s wicked, and he played drums with them and then he played drums with us. So, yeah, we’ve been going for 7/8 years around Birmingham and have started touring for about 3 or 4 now.

Faye: With the line-up changes, was there ever a point where you were uncertain about the band’s future?
Rich: The last one, yeah. I think it was the start of last year, when we kicked this guy out because the whole atmosphere was just horrible. To be fair to him, he knew it was him, he did say he was the one who was the problem, and then after that it was really like, “Are we really going to be able to find anyone?” Then Nick used to be in a band called Mike TV and we knew Nick for years, because he used to play in local bands in Birmingham and he filled in for us on tour, when he was still in Mike TV,  then he was like, “I just want to be in this band now.” and it just worked out really well.

Interview: A Loss For Words

March 29, 2010

Hitting up the UK for the first time, Faye caught up with A Loss For Words frontman Matty Arsenault, ahead of their Newcastle show. The pair got talking about  the tour so far, their debut album The Kids Can’t Lose – in particular, one ‘interesting’ response, the release of their forthcoming Motown cover record, coming from the Boston hardcore scene, and chavs.

Faye: How are things in the A Loss For Words camp today?
Matty: Good, this has been one of the coolest tours we’ve done, so I’m in a very good mood because I’m having such a good time.

Faye: You’ve been going for a while, and this is your first trip over, are you stoked?
Matty: Yeah, for an unsigned band like ourselves from America, and every night we’ve had a good lot of kids singing along and stuff, it’s been pretty unreal for us, so we’re very stoked.

Faye: Cool, so people have been familiar with you?
Matty: Yeah, some nights more than others, but there’s been some nights where there’s been like 10-20 kids that are going crazy for us and some nights there’s at least like 6 or something, so every night there’s been at least a few kids who know who we are, which is really cool.

Faye: How’s touring with All or Nothing and LYU?
Matty: Cool, I mean, basically, All or Nothing, they did a split with our friends The Wonder Years a while ago, so we were familiar with their music and stuff. When we got offered to do the tour with LYU and All or Nothing, we kind of knew that All or Nothing would be like our friends because we have mutual stuff, but LYU have really showed us such a good time, because me and our bass played ride with LYU, and the other guys ride with All or Nothing, so we all get the chance to get close and to know everybody. It’s been really fun. Great guys.

Faye: Did you have any expectations coming over to the UK?
Matty: I think we just came here with a clear mind, didn’t know what to expect and it’s definitely been better than what I could have ever dreamed of, it’s been great.

Faye: I thought you might have supported someone for your first time coming over, rather than headlining?
Matty: Yeah, basically, the politics of music, it’s so tough to get a favour from somebody, even though we’re friends with everybody, the business side of things always kind of gets in the way of stuff, but I think for our first headliner and tour, in general, over here, I think it’s been going really well. We’re trying to come back in September and do a follow-up. We’re trying to find another band to take us out, but probably it’s going to be us headlining again. I think we’re going to try do something with Not Advised and LYU, but we have to see what’s happening.

Faye: I noticed on your Twitter that you like British slang, what’s your favourite?
Matty: I like ‘chav’, I don’t even know what the equivalent would be in the US, but last night there was a chav at our show and we almost had to fight him, because he was drinking and was pushing all the 14-year-old kids and he was probably like 30-years-old, we just like, “Come on, man. Relax.” I don’t know, he was just the stereotype, and they’ve all been talking about chavs, like, “That’s a chav!” I understand now, I get it.

Interview: Architects

March 25, 2010

The first day on tour with A Day To Remember, and Architects have pulled into Newcastle, where George gets a chance to sit down and talk to frontman Sam Carter and guitarist Tom Searle. They talk about an upcoming album and how they’re going to top the critically acclaimed Hollow Crown, what they’re getting their mothers for Mother’s Day, and the boys are armed with a pen and paper to take on the very first Change The Record Challenge! They don’t know what they let themselves in for…

George: How are you today?
Sam: Very well, very well.
Tom: Boring.
Sam: Yeah, we got here very early, so we’ve been sitting around since…ten? Maybe earlier.
Tom: About ten.
Sam: About ten, so we’ve been sitting around just doing nothing.

George: It’s the first day of the tour, are you excited?

Sam: Yeah, yeah really excited, actually!
Tom: We haven’t played here in fourteen months.
Sam: Last time we played was fourteen months ago, so we’re excited for today, excited for the tour, A Day To Remember are awesome, and Your Demise are great as well so it’s gonna be a fun tour!

George: Have you met the ADTR guys yet, and if so, how are you getting on?
Sam: We met them, we’ve met them a few times, we met them on the (Bring Me The) Horizon tour briefly.
Tom: Soundwave and that, in Australia, we met them on that, so we had a couple of chats.
Sam: Yeah. Good dudes!

George: What do you feel the ADTR tour can do for you as a band?
Tom: Maybe we can play to some people who wouldn’t normally come and see us, I guess! It’s been a while since we’ve done a tour in the UK, we’ve never done a tour this big, I don’t think, in the UK, so that’s cool, play to maybe win over some people. We feel like old dogs these days, like people’s seen us a million times, which obviously isn’t the case, so maybe we can play to some new people.

Live Review: You Me At Six – O2 Academy, Newcastle, March 13th 2010

March 20, 2010

It’s amazing how far You Me At Six have come in the past few years, considering it’d be unheard of for the Surrey quintet to be playing venues almost five thousand kids back then, they’ve managed to headline Slam Dunk Festival, play Download, Reading and Leeds, and support Paramore on an arena tour. It’s alright for some…
