Interview: Reel Big Fish

January 31, 2010

In the midst of touring the UK, Faye recently caught up with ska legends Reel Big Fish as they stopped by in Newcastle, they got talking about a whole lot of ska, their forthcoming 20-year anniversary, and the possibility of a Reel Big Fish arena tour! Seriously…

Faye: Can you introduce yourselves?
Derek: I’m Derek, I play bass in the Reel Big Fish.
Johnny: And I am Johnny Christmas, and I play the trumpet the Reel Big Fish.

Faye: So, how are you today in Newcastle?
Johnny: We’re good, we saw a castle, I’m not sure if it was the ‘Newcastle’, but it was a castle.
Derek: It looked pretty old to me.
Johnny: Yeah, and we saw the self-cleaning bridge.

Faye: Can you tell us a bit about the bands on this tour?
Johnny: Ooh, Sonic Boom Six, a fabulous Manchester band, part hip-hop, part ska, part punk rock, they do it all.
Derek: And Big D and the Kids Table, from the east coast of the US, representing that part of the country.
Johnny [mimicking a Boston accent]: From Boston, down by the harbour! This is the first tour we’ve done with them, we’ve played together with them, I know, at some point, but this is the first tour with them, and they’re a bunch of sweet guys and gals.

Live Review: Reel Big Fish – O2 Academy, Newcastle, February 16th 2009

February 23, 2009

Time to bring out those chequered-slacks again, as the kings of ska, Reel Big Fish, are back in the UK! Faye was lucky enough to catch the sold-out Newcastle show.

The night started off with Random Hand, who, within the past year, have supported other ska heavyweights, such as: Big D and The Kids Table and Streetlight Manifesto, during their UK tours. They may appear to be the Furthest Drives Home-dial-a-support band of the ska world, but, hey, I’m not complaining, at least they have talent and bring something different to the table.

The 4-piece from West Yorkshire got the crowd skanking and clapping-along with their unique fusion of punk, ska, hip-hop, dub, metal, and reggae. Which, on paper, probably looks like a God-awful concoction, but they make it work. In fact, live, they make it work very well, combined with their politically-charged lyrics, energetically-engaging live performance, and an endearingly down-to-earth front man, which left the crowd content and salivating for the rest of their portions of ska lying ahead.
