Live Review: My Passion – O2 Academy 2, Newcastle, October 20th 2010

October 26, 2010

It’s great to watch a band grow, both in popularity and musically, and My Passion just happen to be one of those bands. A little over a year-and-a-half ago, the now five-piece were playing the dingy Cooperage on the Quayside and now, having also been a part of the Kerrang! Tour earlier this year, they have packed out the Academy 2.

SummerlinWhile fairly new, Summerlin are quickly making a name for themselves on the UK pop-punk circuit, and Faye caught up with the Yorkshire boys following their little stint with My Passion last month in Sunderland.

They talk about the night’s events, their debut EP, new material, future plans, and reveal the secrets of their renowned fancy footwork.

Faye: Can you say your names and what you do in Summerlin?
Jake: I’m Jake, I play bass.
Drew: I’m Drew, I sing.
Ben: I’m Ben, I play guitar.
Lee: I’m Lee, I play guitar.
Liam: I’m Liam, I play the drums.

Faye: You played a show with My Passion tonight, how was that?
Ben: Awesome.
Drew: Hung over is the word I’d use for the gig. [laughs] No, the three shows we’ve done have been really, really good, we always like playing with those boys.

Faye: So, it was a heavy night last night?
Ben: So much fun, it was one of the best nights we’ve ever had as a band.
Jake: I’m in court tomorrow.
All: [laughs]
Ben: He steals my lines and because it’s on tape, he’ll claim it’s his, what a thief!

June 7, 2009

Feature: The State Of The North East ‘Scene’

June 6, 2009

Looking at the crop of new British talent in what is, essentially, rock bands, across the land, there’s some real gems hidden away in there; where were You Me At Six all but three years ago? Playing to a handful of people in local bars night after night in their native Surrey.

The same goes for the Welsh vallies, which have spawned the likes of Attack! Attack!, Kids In Glass Houses, Save Your Breath, and such, in recent years. Every area in the UK seems to have a real promise coming from them, in the form of one band or another. Brighton these days, is somewhat of a haven for rock, punk and metal bands, with acts like The Ghost Of A Thousand, Johnny Truant, and The Crave among others to come from the seaside town.

But getting really local, there is one place that in my honest opinion, really lacks in new talent in rock, pop punk, metal, punk, you guessed it, the North East.

March 29, 2009

Sunday nights are never the best nights for gigs, nobody can be bothered to turn up, and the atmosphere never grows. Taking that into account, it comes as no surprise to see that tonight’s gig is played in front of less than a hundred people.
